OMEGA Speedmaster Watches

Introduced in 1957, the OMEGA Speedmaster began as a precision chronograph before its story moved beyond Earth. NASA qualified the Speedmaster for manned space missions in 1965, and in 1969 it became the first watch worn on the Moon.

That singular history lives on in the Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional, while the wider collection continues to evolve through the Speedmaster 38, Moonphase, Chronoscope, Pilot and Dark Side of the Moon. Explore the collection online or visit our dedicated OMEGA Boutique in Liverpool.

FAQs

What is the OMEGA Speedmaster?

The OMEGA Speedmaster is a collection of Swiss chronograph watches first introduced in 1957. Although best known for the Moonwatch Professional, the wider collection includes automatic chronographs, Moonphase watches, compact Speedmaster 38 models and ceramic Dark Side of the Moon editions.

Why is the OMEGA Speedmaster called the Moonwatch?

The Speedmaster earned the Moonwatch name through its association with NASA. After passing a series of demanding tests, it was declared flight-qualified for all manned space missions in 1965. An OMEGA Speedmaster Professional subsequently became the first watch worn on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.

Are the OMEGA Speedmaster and Moonwatch the same?

The Moonwatch is part of the wider OMEGA Speedmaster collection. The name most commonly refers to the 42mm Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional, which preserves many of the defining design details associated with the watches used during the Apollo programme.

Is the OMEGA Speedmaster automatic or manually wound?

The Speedmaster collection includes both manual-winding and automatic watches. The contemporary 42mm Moonwatch Professional uses the manually wound OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861. Other models, including selected Speedmaster 38, Moonphase and Dark Side of the Moon watches, use automatic movements.

How often should I wind an OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch?

A manual-winding Speedmaster Moonwatch should be wound regularly to keep it running. The Calibre 3861 provides a power reserve of approximately 50 hours when fully wound. Wind the crown gently until you feel resistance and avoid forcing it beyond that point.

What is the difference between Hesalite and sapphire Moonwatch models?

Hesalite crystal gives the Moonwatch an appearance closer to the models associated with NASA’s Apollo missions. Sapphire crystal offers greater resistance to scratches and a clearer, more contemporary finish. The caseback and presentation can also differ, so the complete specifications of each reference should be compared.

Does OMEGA make a Speedmaster Moonphase?

Yes. Selected OMEGA Speedmaster references combine the collection’s chronograph design with a moon-phase display. The current DMR collection includes Speedmaster Meteorite Moonphase models in a 43mm case, featuring a representation of the Moon alongside the chronograph functions.

What sizes are OMEGA Speedmaster watches available in?

Sizes vary across the collection. Current models include the 38mm Speedmaster, the 42mm Moonwatch Professional, 43mm Moonphase and Chronoscope watches, and larger Dark Side of the Moon models. Trying different case sizes in person is the best way to compare their proportions and weight.

What does the tachymeter on an OMEGA Speedmaster do?

The tachymeter scale allows the wearer to calculate average speed over a known distance using the chronograph. Start the chronograph at the beginning of the measured distance and stop it at the end. The chronograph seconds hand indicates the corresponding average speed on the bezel.

Are OMEGA Speedmaster watches water-resistant?

Water resistance varies between Speedmaster references. The Moonwatch Professional and other Speedmaster models have their own individual ratings, which are displayed within the product specifications. Water resistance should be checked before swimming, and the seals should be inspected periodically.

How much does an OMEGA Speedmaster cost?

The price depends on the model, movement, case material and complication. Speedmaster 38 watches, Moonwatch Professional models, Moonphase references and ceramic Dark Side of the Moon editions sit at different price points. Current UK prices are displayed on each DMR product page.
